Family Fun in San Miguel de Allende: Tips for Traveling with Toddlers

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

San Miguel de Allende, a charming colonial town in central Mexico, is a popular destination for travelers seeking art, culture, and history. However, when you have toddlers in tow, you may wonder if the town is a suitable destination for a family vacation. The answer is yes! San Miguel de Allende is a fantastic destination for families with young children but there are some things you have to consider. Here are some tips for enjoying your visit with toddlers.

  1. Choose family-friendly accommodations When traveling with toddlers, it's essential to choose accommodations that are kid-friendly. Look for hotels or an Airbnb that offer amenities such as swimming pools, playgrounds, and space to play. Consider staying in a rental with a kitchen so that you can prepare meals and snacks for your little ones.

  2. Take it slow Traveling with toddlers can be challenging, and it's essential to take things slow. Don't try to cram too much into your itinerary. Plan one or two activities per day, and make sure to leave plenty of time for naps, snacks, and playtime. Mariachis and other musicians will perform in front of the Michael the Archangel Cathedral and is a fun performance for your little ones!

  3. Visit the parks and playgrounds San Miguel de Allende has several beautiful parks and playgrounds where toddlers can run and play. The Parque Juarez is a popular destination for families, with a playground, a duck pond, and plenty of green space. The Jardin Principal is another great option, with a playground and a central plaza where you can relax and people-watch.

  4. You want to consider that the streets and the side walks in San Miguel de Allende are very narrow and are not stroller friendly. The rooftops are not child friendly and will not allow toddlers. Many restaurants accommodated a table on the lower levels and not all restaurants had high chairs.

  5. Enjoy the art and architecture San Miguel de Allende is known for its stunning architecture and vibrant art scene. Take a stroll through the town's streets and alleys and admire the colorful buildings and street art. Many galleries and museums are family-friendly, and you can introduce your toddlers to art and history in a fun and engaging way.

  6. Stay safe When traveling with toddlers, it's essential to stay safe. Be vigilant and keep an eye on your children at all times, especially in crowded places. Ubers are very inexpensive and Mexico does not require children to ride in a car seat. An Uber can run between $1-$4 depending on the distance,

  7. San Miguel de Allende has plenty of celebrations throughout the year so make sure to research if there are any activities or holidays during your stay. We traveled with our babies during Michael the Archangel celebration in September and there were fireworks every night. If you have little ones, make sure to take a sound machine so your babies can sleep through the noise.

With its family-friendly accommodations, parks and playgrounds, cultural activities, and stunning architecture, San Miguel de Allende has something for everyone. Just remember to take it slow, stay safe, and enjoy your family vacation!
